The history of Wolfenbüttel

back to overview

Wolfenbüttel was mentioned for the first time in 1118. A first settlement may have been founded in the 10th century, when the first settlers settled on an island of the Oker River around a moated castle. The lords belonged to the dynasty of Wulferesbutle, which gave the town its name.
