The Guelphes residence and its museum

back to overview

Wolfenbüttel’s residence is the second largest Lower Saxonian residence still existing in our days. Its beginnings go back to the 13th century when there was a moated castle. Today’s outward appearance is the result of changes made in the 18th century. Its Baroque façade was realized by the ducal architect Hermann Korb. He also realized the portal and the representative bridge leading to the residence. Above the entrance you can see Duke August Wilhelm’s initials “AW”, because he ordered to rebuild the residence. His motto used to be “Parta tueri” (“Maintain what you have acquired”), it can still be seen below the coat of arms of the Guelphs. The allegorical figures are a Baroque mirror of virtues representing the Duke’s rights and duties.
