St. Mary's church and holy Trinity's church

back to overview

Wolfenbüttel’s St. Mary’s church is the second biggest church built by the Guelphs, after Brunswick’s cathedral. It is also one of the biggest Protestant churches in Northern Germany. Its foundation was laid in 1608 by the ducal architect Paul Francke. It was built on 900 oak stilts because of the boggy soil. The different styles make this church special: The Renaissance building has characteristic mansard roofs and Gothic windows; its interior is composed of a medieval hall-church and a Baroque belfry. It houses one of the biggest organs in Northern Germany. There are also the tombs of 29 family members of the Guelphs and the ducal composer Michael Praetorius is buried in St. Mary’s. He was one of the most important composers and teachers of his time. His Christmas carol “Lo, how a rose e'er blooming” has made him immortal.
