Market square and the street “Krumme Straße”

back to overview

Wolfenbüttel’s Market Square was conceived more than 400 years ago. The then existing bog had to be drained. The town hall was also built at the beginning of the 17th century. In the adjacent building, you can find the council’s scales which were used to check the measures and weight of the goods sold on the market. You can still see the standard cubit and one of the scales. Today’s entrance hall to the town hall is the former council’s scales. Above the portal, you can see Wolfenbüttel’s coat of arms. It shows a leaping horse as the symbol of the old Saxons and the Guelphs.
