Duke August's Library and Lessing's House

back to overview

Duke August’s Library is one of the most important collections of books about the European intellectual history. It was founded as early as 1572 by Duke Julius in the residence. In the 17th century, it was transferred to today’s Lessingplatz where a proper library was built by the learned collector of books Duke August, who gave it its name. He made it one of the biggest libraries in Europe. It was even called “The Eighth Wonder of the World”. Today’s library was built at the end of the 19th century in the style of a Florentine palace.
